Ideas for climate- and environmentally-friendly travel
FLIGHTS
When booking your flight, try to find a route that is most direct and has as few legs as possible, as take-offs and landings use the most fuel and produce the majority of the flight emissions.
Flying economy class is responsible for fewer emissions than business or first class, as more passengers in economy are transported per flight.
When deciding to fly, consider public transportation or driving to your destination if the distance is relatively short. Due to the higher take-off and landing emissions, short flights have a higher per mile emission output than long flights.
When flying for business meetings, consider whether the meeting could be accomplished with Zoom or Skype or another online platform instead of in-person.
AT YOUR DESTINATION
Bring your own refillable water bottle to avoid single-use plastics.
If traveling in a country where the water is unsafe to drink from the tap, bring your own portable water sterilizer, such as the Steri-pen instead of relying solely on single-use bottled water.
Bring your own soap, shampoo and lotion to avoid the single-use plastic bottles provided by hotels.
